a big deal out of it. web video this morning, you played paul ryan's comments. you know, i don't -- if president obama and his campaign team had a choice, i think they would rather joe biden not have used that phrase in relation to the last four years. that said, i think the life cycle of a gaffe now, andrea is so small it kind of rises up and becomes a huge thing for 15 minutes or one day, and then it disappears. my guess is, at 9:01 p.m. tonight when the debate starts, this will not be as big a deal and there will be new things to talk about, new issues to digest, again, not a great moment for joe biden and clearly one the white house would have rather he not have said. i just don't know that, you know, in two weeks time we're talking about it. >> all right. we'll see what -- whether there's a new gaffe or two or three to replace that one tonight. thank you very much. see you later. joining me in denver, stephanie cutter, deputy campaign manager for the president's re-election effort. where were you when you heard joe biden yesterday? >> i don't remember. because we don't see

at st. pete in st. petersburg, florida. last night a very confident mitt romney and paul ryan whipped up their base in rural virginia and as much as the romney campaign is determined not to cloak their actual fireworks it wasn't exactly subtle. >> last night was an important night for the country because people got to -- got the chance to cut through all the attacks and counterattacks and all of the theatrics associated with a campaign and instead were able to listen to substance. >> romney also picked up the official endorsement of the nra. we didn't know they weren't supporting him. whose supporters were of course a major presence at that very raucous rally. see all the orange there? the campaign is trying to capitalize on momentum with new ads releasing four over the last 24 hours including a new ad in ohio promising a million new manufacturing jobs and a testimonial from a former unlv star greg anthony a college basketball analyst for cbs sports. >> i voted for barack obama. i thought he would be a centrist. i really lost faith in him. i'm supporting mitt romney. he is a no excuse ki

was in his wheel house when he was talking about the economy. >> paul ryan is cutting 716 for medicare. the exact same number in his budget which was passed by the republican house and the president never mentioned it. >> it does remind you that the last debate that mitt romney was seven months ago and the last debate that barack obama had was four years ago. and the people he's used to sparring with are reporters. >> how did he prepare? how did the president prepare for this? >> we got 45 minutes in before we got a ryan budget mentioned. mitt romney made the choice to put ryan on the ticket. when we look at where the polls started to separate before the convention, right around when ryan was put on the ticket. when do the numbers on medicare and the polling start to go upside down for the republicans? when ryan is put on the ticket. yet we get 45 minutes through the debate before paul ryan is mentioned. he's the incarnation of the modern republican party which will inherit the power that you give to mitt romney since they will be governing from the house most likely. that is the key t

to be great. if nothing else i guarantee you it will be very entertaining to watch joe biden and paul ryan. and there again, i think there is an opportunity to -- i think romney's gotten some deserved momentum out of -- he had a very strong performance. he's gotten a momentum. i think his campaign is trying to figure out how to keep that momentum going into next week. the debate might be where that momentum is blunted a little bit. joe biden is going to say look, paul, how much time do you need? here's a white board. here's a pen. how much time do you need to do the math? we're here for you. let's work it out. >> hey rich, how much in terms of paul ryan, how much do you think is resting on his shoulders? how do you think he's going to fare against joe biden? he's a lot younger, doesn't have as much debate experience. >> that's not true. they're both members of congress. they have a lot of debate -- that's what you do in congress whether it's in committee or on the floor. i think they will both be more skilled, frankly, than either of the two presidential candidates who did not have that ki

president will be much more effective in his debate with paul ryan than the president was in his debate with mitt romney because the vice president is used to getting beaten up. >> well, that's not a really high bar, is it, now. gene robinson, you wrote "obama's off night gives romney an opening." and i do think that joe biden has been out there and is used to getting beat up. and i think will do very well in the debate along with paul ryan. but your column, talking about obama's off night. can you help us out here? we're trying to figure out what happened to president obama. where was he? >> where was he? that's the question. it was really, you know, you kind of watched the thing unfold and just wondered when it was -- when the debate was going to start, basically, because -- and when the president was going to, you know, become president obama again. all the stuff you guys said in the last segment is probably right about that performance. and it's not that unusual, if you look historically for an incumbent president to have a rough time out of the blocks on the debates. and they tend

rattner, to be more specific about his policies, which many argue he hasn't been very specific nor paul ryan. >> he hasn't been very specific. but i think his bigger problem is the first one you said. that he's got to create some sense of connectivity or relationship with the voters. i think that's really his goal as well as what we were talking about in the earlier segment of trying to bring a clear depiction of obama's policies and the fact they haven't done everything they were supposed to. >> john harwood, can he do that in a debate? is the debate the setting? that would be when you're most clenched and concerned about every word that comes out of your mouth. how do you show the things mitt romney needs to communicate to the public? >> it's possible. he's got to play really well. one of the nationals' pitchers got hammered the other night and he said i lost my arm slot. and he was talking about the exact right angle of the ball to the delivery of the plate. mitt romney's got to find precisely the right arm slot. aggression with the right amount of respect for a popular president. he
